Federal authorities are currently investigating the actions of former Cottageville
police officer Randall Price who shot and killed the former mayor, Mr.
Bert Reeves. Ashley Reeves, the personal representative of the estate
of Bert Reeves, has filed suit against the town of Cottageville, the police
department and former police officer Price, alleging violations of the
civil rights as well as negligent acts by the defendants. The shooting death took place
on May 16, 2011 on a rural dirt road in Cottageville. The civil case against
Price has a 90 day stay while the federal investigation is completed,
however the case against the town and the police department is moving forward.
The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of the town in the hiring and
lack of supervision of Price, and that the officer used excessive force
in the incident in which Mr. Reeves was shot and killed.
The initial investigation into the shooting was conducted by the South
Carolina State Law Enforcement Division. Federal authorities are now investigating
the fatal shooting and the ongoing investigation is being conducted by
the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department.
The family of former Mayor Reeves is represented by Attorney Mullins McLeod of
McLeod Law Group, LLC of Charleston, SC.
