At approximately 2:45 A.M. on February 4, 2018, an Amtrak train derailed,
colliding with a CSX freight train at a rail yard just 10 miles south
of Columbia, South Carolina.
The Amtrak train was traveling from New York to Miami when the lead engine
and a number of passenger cars derailed and hit a freight train that was
on the loading side of the track. According to Governor Henry McMasters,
the Amtrak was on the wrong side when the crash occurred.
The injured individuals sustained injuries ranging from scratches to broken bones.
The National Transportation Safety Board will be heading the investigation
to determine the cause of the crash.
The collision also resulted in about 5,000 gallons of fuel being spilled,
however hazmat teams believe the fuel is thought not to be a danger to
anyone in the general public.
